4 Types of Attic Insulation
Spray foam insulation is the key to keeping your home cool and comfortable during hot summer months. It also reduces your heating costs during cold winter months.
The Department of Energy recommends that homeowners install attic insulation with a R-value above R-30, although different climates may require higher R-value insulation products. Upgrading your attic insulation is a simple, cost-effective way to improve your home’s efficiency and comfort.
There are 4 common types of attic insulation:
Fiberglass batt insulation is a popular option. It consists of tiny slivers of glass fibers that were formerly part of sand and recycled materials. It’s available in a variety of widths suited to standard spacing between wall studs, attic trusses or rafters, and floor joists. It’s lightweight and relatively quick to install. It can be purchased with or without a facing that acts as a vapor and air barrier.
Reflective insulation (sometimes called radiant barrier) is a popular choice in warmer climates. It reflects radiant heat away from the house, lowering cooling costs. However, it can be less effective over time because it’s prone to collecting dust.
Blown-in insulation is another popular attic insulation option, particularly for DIYers. It’s made from loose particles of cellulose, fiberglass, or rockwool that are blown into the attic space using a machine. It provides comprehensive coverage, reducing air gaps and corners. However, it can settle over time, reducing its R-value, and is susceptible to moisture absorption, increasing the risk of mold and mildew.
