Orthopedic Surgeons
Ortho surgeons specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles. They can perform a wide variety of surgical procedures including fracture repairs, joint replacements and arthroscopy. An orthopedist may also prescribe medications and/or physical therapy to treat your condition. You should see an orthopedist if you have bone, muscle or joint pain that limits your activities, has lasted longer than 48 hours or isn’t responding to medication. Ideally, you should go to your primary care doctor (PCP) first before seeing an orthopedic specialist.
Ortho Surgeons Unveiled: Exploring Your Options
In a survey of orthopedists, the majority (99%) reported being happy with their careers. They were more likely to feel this way if they had ranked high in their medical school classes, were motivated by a desire for personal development or a desire to work for a particular institution rather than financial gain and if they felt that they had contributed significantly to research (p 0.001). Age, sex, marital status, years in leadership positions and academic productivity did not play as big of a role in whether or not surgeons felt that they were happy with their career choice.
Often, patients visit an orthopedist as a last resort for pain that has lasted months or even years. Our physical therapists and orthopedic doctors are always trying to help patients heal through nonsurgical means before considering surgery. That’s because, just like you, they’d rather avoid unnecessary surgery to reduce the risk of complications.
