One customer, a white woman who said she had lined her front yard with Confederate flags, told him he would be back to buy more, and another black man came in to tell the shop’s owner he was buying a flag “to burn.” All of these sales were made on the same day that South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley announced that the state’s capitol grounds would be stripped of the Confederate flag.
